Under Armour

There’s a line of athletic apparel known as Under Armour. It is billed as performance apparel that wicks sweat, dries fast, and keeps your performance at your best. Quite a promise! I have several pieces and so does my husband. They sell whole outfits of this super material that helps you win the war of working out because you are under the armor, the protection of this material.

This weekend we honor the millions of men and women who have served in the US Armed Forces. We honor veterans. We pay tribute to their bravery, their sacrifice, and their unwavering commitment to ensure that our homeland is safe, while protecting our democracy. Quite a promise!

And while you might not believe the Under Armour promise, you can count on the brave soldiers who put their lives on the line every time they put on their uniform. And for that, we thank you!

What drives soldiers to do what they do? Is there any advice we could take from one who’s been there? King David was known as a great warrior for God. He was also known for doing battle in spiritual warfare. And for most of us, those who haven’t seen physical battle, our battlefield is spiritual in nature, so perhaps we can take advice from the great veteran warrior for God, on engaging the enemy in spiritual warfare.

There are all kinds of armor. From the Middle Ages on, soldiers have fashioned something that would protect them in battle. But there’s another type of armor that will also keep you at your best performance:

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?...

For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will set me high on a rock.

Psalm 27:1, 5

Put your armor on, Saints - the armor of God! Keep it close to you. Tie it on tight. For in the day of trouble, in hard times, in trying times you need the armor. You need a place you can run to, a covering, a shelter, a mighty fortress is our God! The text assures us that God will hide us, conceal us, and set us high on a rock. That reminds me of my brother saving me from being bitten by a dog. What did he do? He lifted me up and took the bite himself! Sounds a lot like Jesus, doesn’t it?

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate our soldiers, the ones who took hits for us, endured hardship for us. And we’ll give glory to our Lord, Jesus Christ, who took the ultimate hit for us on the cross. He gave His life, that we could live. All gave some, and some gave all. Glory to God!
