Hidden Figures

In 2016 the movie Hidden Figures was released. It told the story of a group of African American women mathematicians who played a vital role in the early years of NASA’s space program. These women performed their duties with excellence; however, they were not recognized until decades later. Perhaps it was because they were women, or perhaps it was because they were Black, or perhaps for both reasons. Nevertheless, they persevered and are now known and recognized for their amazing work in the U.S. space program.

As we prepare to celebrate mothers and those with a mothering spirit, I can’t help but make the comparison. Mothers are mostly behind the scenes. Doing the work of mothering without even considering it as “work.” They make sure that their families get the proper food, clothing, and education in order to produce healthy adults. Their calculations are meticulous at times. My mother could stretch a dollar and make it holler! And they know precisely what it takes to mend tummy aches and broken hearts. All with no credit (and none expected!).

But for one Sunday of the year, the country pauses to acknowledge the love of mothers, and those who have been a mother to us. These hidden figures are given the spotlight they deserve and recognized for their love and contributions to our lives and to the world.

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate Hidden Figures: A Mothering Spirit! You can worship in-house at 10:00am (masks optional), or you can also join us online. For online worship go to www.umcgt.org.

Mother’s Day & Confirmation Sunday! This Sunday will be a triple blessing. We will celebrate the mothering spirit, and watch the next generation be confirmed in the faith! So, what’s the third blessing? The children will sing! So, grab your mom, stepmom, foster mom, dad-mom, grandma, nana, aunts, anyone who’s shown you that mothering spirit, and join in the celebration!

Organ Update. To date we have received over $42,000 in pledges and cash donations for the Organ Fund! We’re on our way, but your help is still needed to reach the goal of $63,000. Please consider joining in the generosity by making your pledge or donating directly. Together we can make it happen. If you would like a pledge card, please call the office at 314-469-6740 or pick one up at the Welcome Center.

I hope to see you on Sunday, but if not…Happy Mother’s Day!

M is for the many things she gave me

O means only that she’s growing old

T is for the tears she shed to save me

H is for her heart as pure as gold

E is for her eyes with love light shining

R means right & right she’ll always be

Put them all together they spell MOTHER

A word that means the world to me!

Blessings,

Pastor Linda
